Wondering what’s happening at your Neighborhood House and in the community? Check it out!
We are dedicated to ensure our most vulnerable population isn’t going hungry. You can help us!
March is National Meals on Wheels Month and our goal is to educate others about the food insecurity issues that plague those 60 and over in our community. Food insecurity hit record numbers during the pandemic as we prepared, packaged, and delivered 1,000 meals a day to seniors in Peoria and Tazewell Counties.
While the daily meals allow for many seniors to remain independent, Meals on Wheels is so much more than just a meal delivery service. The daily social contact our clients receive is equally as important, as many seniors face isolation. The pandemic unfortunately has only increased this isolation for most of our clients. Many of whom say our delivery drivers are the only person they see during the day.
Our demand has increased 50% since March 2020 due to COVID. We were able to meet the demand until October 2020, when COVID relief funding ran out and it became necessary to implement a waiting list. As we move into 2021, food insecurity continues to be at record high levels both nationally and locally. However, this year’s funding is based off of pre-COVID levels but the current need continues to exceed those levels.
We have been forced to implement a waiting list that has grown to over 300 potential clients, reducing our daily meal deliveries to just 700. Without relief we will need to further reduce our meal deliveries.
We are passionate about the well-being of homebound senior citizens. With your support we will continue to ensure they retain the comfort that comes with that familiar knock at the door.

New Tutor Trainings
Neighborhood House is in need of tutors for reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. One-on-one, small group and whole class tutoring are available. We are hosting new tutor trainings on:
June 29th 10:00am – 12:00pm
Due to the continued spread of COVID-19, our scheduled venue being closed, and the direct impact the local restaurant industry has faced, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Food Fight 2021 event. Our team is working diligently on alternative fundraising opportunities to ensure our community programs keep pace with the growing need, despite this loss of revenue. We want to thank all our local chefs for their continued support of Neighborhood House and look forward to seeing them back in 2022.
Our team is excited to participate in the 48th RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa), to help ensure those in need aren’t going hungry. This annual week-long event challenges cyclist to travel a 468-mile state-wide route across Iowa, with planned daily stops in various towns along the way.
RAGBRAI is the longest, largest and oldest bicycle touring event in the world, bringing thousands of cycling enthusiasts together from across the nation and even around the world.
We have a small group of riders confirmed this year and with your support, each turn of the pedals will help provide meals for local seniors and families.
Not feeling up to the challenge of bicycling across Iowa? We understand and have sponsorship opportunities available. Please contact Brent Oest at firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more.
Thank you for your support of our team as they Pedal Wheels to Provide Meals.
As part of our mission we strive to provide a safe environment for our community. With the ever-changing situation and uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Saddle Up fundraiser for 2020. Our team is working on virtual fundraising opportunities to help prevent the negative impact this loss of revenue will have on our services the community needs. Watch our Facebook page and website for ways you can continue to partner with us.

Santa for Seniors
This year Neighborhood House partnered with UFS once again for Santa for Seniors. Although the wrapping of presents looked a little different this year we were still able to deliver 1,500 gifts to home bound senior citizens. Thank you to all our volunteers and UFS for making this possible. We couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you for your support!
This year we were saddened to not be able to collect toy donations for our annual Children’s Toy Shop. However, we remain dedicated to our area youth. We were able to adapt our Children’s Toy Shop into an Angel Tree for approximately 320 children currently within our meal delivery program. Thank you to all the local families, businesses and organizations that adopted these children. You helped us spread so much joy this holiday season!
